Finding Relief from Neck Pain: Four Innovative Therapies You Should Know
September 2025 Newsletter
If you’ve ever struggled with neck pain, then you understand how it can interfere with almost every aspect of daily life. You might have a hard time focusing on work or enjoying even simple activities like reading or watching a movie.
Neck pain can develop for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes, it results from a direct injury (such as whiplash during a car accident). Other times, it develops gradually from poor posture or a sedentary lifestyle. But no matter, you deserve to find lasting relief!
At Optimum Physio Therapies, we pride ourselves on creating personalized treatment plans that address your unique needs. In practice, this means that in addition to standard treatments like exercise or manual therapy, we also employ innovative techniques that target deeper sources of tension and dysfunction.
Let’s explore four of those techniques now.

1. Dry Needling
Dry needling uses very thin, sterile needles inserted into trigger points–tight knots of muscle or connective tissue that can cause pain locally or refer discomfort to other areas.
The needle stimulates the tissue, prompting it to contract and then relax. This can improve blood flow, reduce tension, and reset how the muscle communicates with the nervous system.
Dry needling typically isn’t painful. However, most people feel a brief twitch or cramp when the trigger point is released, followed by a sense of lightness or even improved mobility.
Why Does Dry Needling Help with Neck Pain?
Neck pain often results from overactive or shortened muscles. Dry needling can target these directly, reducing muscle spasms, improving mobility, and decreasing nerve irritation.

2. Cupping
Cupping therapy uses suction to gently lift the skin and underlying tissues. Traditionally used in Eastern medicine, it’s now been adopted into physical therapy settings for pain relief and enhanced tissue healing.
During a cupping session, we’ll place specialized glass or plastic cups onto your skin and apply suction. The suction draws blood and lymphatic fluid to the area, encouraging circulation and promoting tissue recovery.
Depending on your needs, we may leave the cups in place for a few minutes or move them across your skin for a gentle massage. Afterward, you may notice temporary red or purple marks on your skin. These are normal responses and usually fade in a few days.
Why Does Cupping Help with Neck Pain?
The increased circulation brought on by cupping can help reduce inflammation, ease muscle tension, and improve the mobility of connective tissue, making it easier to move the neck without discomfort.
Cupping can be particularly useful for patients with muscle tightness linked to poor posture or repetitive strain.

3. Neubie Therapy
The Neubie (Neuro-Bio-Electric Stimulator) is a unique electrical stimulation device that uses direct current rather than the alternating current found in most other e-stim devices.
It works by sending controlled electrical impulses to the muscles, helping them contract in precise ways and retrain how the nervous and muscular systems communicate with each other.
During a typical Nuebie session, one of our PTs will lead you through targeted movements while the device delivers the electrical pulses. Many patients notice improved range of motion and decreased pain even after the first few treatments.
Why Does Nuebie Therapy Help with Neck Pain?
Neck pain can develop due to muscular imbalances. Essentially, some muscles are too weak, causing nearby muscles to overcompensate and become more likely to suffer injury. The Nuebie helps restore those imbalances, improve overall muscle coordination, and reduce protective tension in the neck.

4. Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is a treatment offered at Optimum Physio Therapies for its safe, effective, and non-invasive way to treat pain and aid in the recovery of many conditions. Laser treatments work by releasing photons into the tissues surrounding the affected area that is being treated. These photons help in relieving pain, energizing cells, and increasing circulation to the injured area.
Why Does Laser Therapy Help with Neck Pain?
Laser therapy works by stimulating cellular repair and increasing blood flow in targeted tissues. This can reduce inflammation, ease muscle tightness, and promote faster healing in strained or irritated areas of the neck.
It is especially beneficial for patients dealing with chronic stiffness, nerve irritation, or lingering pain from repetitive stress, as the gentle, non-invasive treatment encourages natural recovery while providing lasting relief.
Combining Therapies for a Truly Comprehensive Approach
While dry needling, cupping, and Neubie therapy offer plenty of benefits on their own, we find that they really shine when incorporated into a complete physical therapy program. We might blend them with more standard techniques, including:
- Manual therapy to help mobilize the neck joint
- Stretching and strengthening exercises tailored to address postural imbalances, muscle weakness, and limited mobility.
- Education on improving your posture to reduce ongoing strain.
- Various self-care strategies, including home exercises or ergonomic adjustments
